Ever heard of a miniature country Slovenia offering gorgeous landscapes, from the snow-capped Alpine peaks, turquoise-green rivers, to Venetian-style coastline. Sure, it may not be easy to find on the map, but you’ll have a hard time finding a place so small offering so much. Everywhere and anytime you go, you’ll always run into something that reflects your unique taste and view of the world.
Slovenia is concocted as a blue country of Europe, with hundreds of kilometers fishable streams and creeks of a great variety, from the chalk streams, to freestone’s and enchanting lakes.
Slovenia waters boast good populations of Marble trout, Brown trout, Rainbows, Grayling and Huchen. We know where they live and how to tempt them to take the right fly, presented the right way!
Let’s start with the Alpine rivers, which captivates you with its crystal clear emerald blue water, flowing through the breathtaking green countryside, under the Alpine peaks. It offers home to native species marble trout, closely related to brown trout in appearance and behavior.
Slovenian chalk streams are close relative to UK’s chalk streams, where fly fishing was born three centuries ago. Smaller and medium-sized slow flowing, gentle streams that originate from under-ground source and meander through green valleys. The bottom is relatively flat, devoid of large rocks and mostly covered with rooted aquatic vegetation. The rest of these gentle flows is a habitat rich in aquatic life, remaining ice-free in winter and constant water temperature, which enables growth of trout steadily through the year.

Fly fishing in Slovenia is a delicate game. We’d recommend a 5-6wt, perfect for almost anything. But if you bring a combination of two rods to fish with, a 4wt for chalk streams and smaller brooks and a 6wt for larger rivers and lakes would be the perfect match. For proponents of tight nymphing a 10-10’6” 3-4wt may come handy.
